It’s been labelled as ‘cheap’ and a ‘disgrace’ but the first Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder match was pretty much won by a man.
As you can see in the video above, it was James Ellsworth who ascended the ladder to claim the briefcase, only to hand it to his ally Carmella.
WWE has been waving the flag for the promotion of women in sports heavily for almost two years, so last night’s decision has been heavily criticised by fans and talent alike.
Smackdown bosses, commissioner Shane McMahon and general manager Daniel Bryan, have promised action.
That, however, may not be enough to placate the women’s division on the show.
The controversial moment occurred when Becky Lynch appeared to be on the verge of victory, only to be toppled off the ladder by Ellsworth.
He then climbed to the top, unhooked the briefcase and dropped it to Carmella, who now has a Smackdown Women’s Championship opportunity whenever she wants one over the next 12 months.
It’s not just the women on Smackdown that are angry, with RAW’s superstars voicing their displeasure too.
Despite accusastions she has sent the Women’s Division backwards by claiming her victory in such a manner, it appears Carmella is still in a celebratory mood.
