Cesc Fabregas’ sarcastic applause leads to sending off for Chelsea

Cesc Fabregas saw red in Chelsea’s 3-2 defeat by Burnley for two bookings, the first of which came from an unnecessary sarcastic applause towards referee Craig Pawson.

After Gary Cahill was sent off early on for Chelsea for a studs-up challenge on Steven Defour, his team-mates were aggrieved with a number of decisions made by the referee.

As Burnley were awarded a free-kick in midfield, Fabregas sarcastically clapped Pawson for his decision, which prompted the official to book him.

Later in the game, Fabregas flew in on Jack Cork near the touchline, and received his marching orders from Pawson.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte joked that he will prepare his side to go down to 10 men for the next game.

Chelsea 2-3 Burnley

“[Cahill’s early sending off] was a key moment, because to play the rest of the game with 10 men, and then with nine men, is not easy. But in the last three games we end the game with 10 men or less.

Conte then joked: “I think I will have to adapt a new system to play with nine men or 10 men for the next game, to anticipate this situation!”
