George Honeyman celebrates after scoring the winning goal

George Honeyman scored the only goal of the game as Sunderland edged past Bury 1-0 in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Thursday evening.

In a game that saw chances at a premium, the 22-year-old chipped over Bury goalkeeper Joe Murphy in the 69th minute to seal the Black Cats’ spot in the second-round draw.

The Shakers saw their captain Stephen Dawson substituted in the 16th minute as he was stretchered off with a knee injury and never truly tested Sunderland’s defence.

The Sky Bet Championship side will find out their opponents straight after their victory with the second-round draw taking place at 10pm on .
